This week on View from the Gutters, our topic work is The Authority, by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch. An important touchstone of modern comics, The Authority is the banner example of the “widescreen comics” movement of the late 90s and early 00s which massively influenced the style and tone of super-hero comics of the last decade (and directly inspired the creation of Marvel’s Ultimate Universe).
Following directly from Ellis’s run on Stormwatch, The Authority is a story which explores the idea of a JLA-like group stripped of many of the genre conventions we typically associate with super-heroes, and is in many ways a reaction to Grant Morrison’s then-recent work on Justice League of America. It stands as an important work in the canon of super-hero comics, and it’s a great read to boot.
In our recommendation section our hosts nominated The Outsiders, Vol. 1: Looking for Trouble, Supermarket, The Hedge Knight, Thunderbolts, Vol. 1, Azumanga Daioh, and Lazarus for discussion on the next episode, and our selected title is Supermarket.
Our hosts for this episode were Andrew Chard, Joe Preti, Adam Panshin, Tobiah Panshin, Matt McGinnis, and Cade Reynolds.
