The Long Run takes place outside of our normal continuity of episodes, and features table discussion of an entire work or long selection of a series. In this episode of The Long Run we talk about Invincible, created by Robert Kirkman and Cory Walker, with art by Ryan Ottley. For this episode we read issues #1-110.
Invincible is the story of Mark Grayson, son of the Earth’s greatest superhero—Omni-Man. The series opens with the day that Mark, as a teenager, first develops superpowers like his father’s. From there it follows Mark’s career as a superhero fighting supervillains, aliens, extra-dimensional invaders, and other threats to the safety of Earth.
It is an interesting and refreshing deconstruction of the superhero, and spends great effort to reference many of the tropes of superhero comics—costume changes, cross-over events, gritty reimaginings, and so on. It is also an excellent superhero story in its own right.
Our hosts on this episode are Andrew Chard, Joe Preti, Kirby Green, Eric Manix, Chris Johnson, and Cade Reynolds.
