  1. There are any number of things that fantastic literature can do and realistic literature can’t. But in the specific case of characters like Kamala Khan or Luke Cage, the greatest impact may lie in taking someone from a group that is normally at the bottom of the social pecking order and turning them into a superhero. That immediately inverts all our expectations about relative power and status and forces us to completely rethink our attitudes towards the group in question. And there’s no way you could do that in realistic fiction.
