  1. I’ve got to say that newspaper strike was a bummer for me personally. It was my senior year of high school. I tied for the highest score in the New York State Regents Scholarship Exam (kind of a statewide version of the Merit Scholarships exam), and I lost my big chance to have my name in the New York Times. There was a story in the Amsterdam News (a black paper up in Harlem) and one in another small local paper, but those were the only ones in the city not hit by the strike.

Though if anybody cares, that Amsterdam News story can be found online under the headline “Queens Girl Scores 292.”
