This week on View from the Gutters, our topic work is X-Men: Longshot. Originally released in 1985-6 as a six-issue miniseries under the title simply Longshot, this series introduced the characters of Longshot, Spiral, Mojo, and the rest of the Mojoverse to the Marvel Universe. Although Longshot would go on to join the X-Men the following year—and remain closely associated with the mutant arm of the MU thereafter, hence the title of the collection—this series didn’t feature any of the X-Men characters (although Spider-Man, She-Hulk, and Dr. Strange do make guest appearances).

Longshot is a strange story from a transitional time in comic books. It features the incredible artwork of Art Adams and is penned by Ann Nocenti, who went on to write a well-remembered run on Daredevil. In this story Longshot is a lost renegade with no memory, haunted/hunted by demons and searching to understand who he is and what his purpose is in life. It is far from a traditional super-hero story, and stands out as an oddity even by the standards of Marvel.

In our recommendation section our hosts nominated Justice League of America: Zatanna’s Serach, Wolverine Legends, Vol. 5: Snikt, Daredevil: The Man Without Fear, Supreme: Story of the Year, and Revival for discussion on the next episode, and our selected title is Revival.

Our hosts for this episode were Andrew Chard, Eric Manix, Tobiah Panshin, and Cade Reynolds.
