Welcome to our new Halloween bonus series, Tales from the Gutter. For the month of October we will be focusing each week on a different genre of horror/spooky comic.

This week we take a look at horror comics geared towards younger readers. To start our discussion, we each read Anya’s Ghost by Vera Brosgol, Coraline by Neil Gaiman and adapted/illustrated by P. Craig Russel and Bad Island by Doug TenNapel.

Our hosts for this episode were Kayleigh Fleeman, Kirbotron 2000, Kit Deforge, Cade Reynolds and special guest Levi Fleeman.

This week on View from the Gutters our topic work is Creature Tech, by Doug TenNapel, creator of Earthworm Jim. Published in 2003, the eponymous Creature Tech is the US government’s secret research facility for the weird and unexplained, located in the small town of Turlock, CA. It’s new head researcher—and out protagonist—is Dr. Michael Ong, the son of Turlock’s preacher, who left town years earlier planning never to return.

Things take a turn for the weird(er) at Creature Tech when the Shroud of Turin is uncovered and almost immediately stolen by the ghost of a mad scienist with a devil hand. It’s that kind of book. Creature Tech is a weird, fun, all-ages book.

In our recommendation section, our hosts nominated Daredevil: The Man Without Fear, The Walking Dead: A New Beginning, The Wicked + The Divine, and Tech Jacket for discussion on the next episode, and our selected title is The Wicked + The Divine, Vol. 1: The Faust Act.

Our hosts for this episode are Andrew Chard, Tobiah Panshin, Joe Preti, and Cade Reynolds.
