This week on View from the Gutters our topic work is:

Shazam!: The Monster Society of Evil

Story and Art by . . . . . . Jeff Smith
Color Art by . . . . . . . . . .Steve Hamaker

From Goodreads:

Granted the powers of the ancient gods, young Billy Batson transforms into Captain Marvel whenever he says the magic word, Shazam! Now, Captain Marvel faces an alien invasion and must stop the Monster Society of Evil from taking over the world. Jeff Smith, the award-winning creator of Bone, brings back an icon of the comic-book world.

Brant says:

Special thanks to Adam Panshin from swooping in and taking my spot due to a family emergency. The conversation ranges from the book itself, to Shazam’s/Captain Marvel’s name, publication history, relevance in the DCU and of course the use of the character in the New 52 with some well tread New 52 laments.

Our hosts for this episode are Tobiah Panshin, Adam Panshin, Joe Preti, and Cade Reynolds. On our next episode we will be reading Black Canary, by Brenden Fletcher and Annie Wu.

A special thank you to our Patreon sponsors for this month: Tony Queretaro, Chris Bianculli, Bryan May, Becca Levendowski, Addison Appleby, and Kerfy Gonzo.

The Long Run takes place outside of our normal continuity of episodes, and features table discussion of an entire work or long selection of a series.

In this episode of The Long Run we talk about Bone, by Jeff Smith. Published independently between 1991 and 2004, Bone follows the three Bone cousins—cartoon character-like people exiled from the town Boneville (in the same sense that Donald Duck is from Duckburg)—who, after crossing a vast desert, find themselves trapped in a magical valley filled with monsters, dragons, lost princesses, and ancient prophesies.

The series is filled with high-stakes adventure, light-hearted humor, and it’s fair share of loss and sorrow. It’s an amazing comic for all ages, and is a particularly good introduction to the world of comics for younger readers who have never read a comic before.

On the next episode of The Long Run we will be reading Doom Patrol, by Grant Morrison.

Our hosts on this episode are Tobiah Panshin, Joe Preti, Audrey Preti, and Cade Reynolds.
