umbral

This week on View from the Gutters our topic work is??Umbral, Vol. 1 & 2, by Antony Johnston and??Christopher Mitten.??Umbral is a fantasy story starring a young thief named Rascal, who has befriended the young prince of her native kingdom.

Things take a turn for the worse, however, when on the day of an eclipse the Umbral???a race of shapeshiting shadow monsters???return, slaughter the royal family, and take their place.??Rascal finds herself on the run from the Umbral, along with a shifty (and possibly immortal) wizard, a smuggler, and a drunken scholar.

In our recommendation section, our hosts nominated The Royals: Masters of War, Princeless, Nimona, and Birthright for discussion on the next episode, and our selected title is??The Royals: Masters of War.

Our hosts for this episode are Andrew Chard, Tobiah Panshin, Kayleigh Fleeman, and Brant Gillihan-Eddy.

manwithoutfear

This week on View from the Gutters our topic work is??Daredevil: The Man Without Fear, by Frank Miller and John Romita, Jr. Published in 1994,??The Man Without Fear explores and revises the origin of Daredevil???and by extension the origins of Elektra and The Kingpin.

If you’re familiar with Frank Miller’s other works you have an idea of what you’re getting into with this book, which was written contemporaneously with Miller’s??Sin City.??Similarly, this book is an excellent sample of John Romita, Jr’s art, which???love it or hate it???is at it’s peak in this book.

In our recommendation section, our hosts nominated Superman: Red Son, iZombie, Alabaster Wolves, Harbinger, and Umbral??for discussion on the next episode, and our selected title is Umbral, Vol. 1 & 2.

Our hosts for this episode are Andrew Chard, Tobiah Panshin, Joe Preti, Kayleigh Fleeman, and Brant Gillihan-Eddy.

marvel

This week on View from the Gutters our topic work is??Captain Marvel,??Vol. 1: In Pursuit of Flight and Vol. 2: Down, by Kelly Sue DeConnick with art by Dexter Soy, Emma Rios, and Filipe Andrade, with colors by Jordie Bellaire. In this series Carol Danvers???long time Ms. Marvel???takes up the mantle of Captain Marvel. She travels through time, fights in World War II, punches a giant robot, and generally hoots and hollers her way through life.

This series represents a major turning point for Carol Danvers as a character, and can be seen as an early indicator of Marvel’s growing push to include more major female superhero characters in their line-up. It also represents a step up in profile for DeConnick, whose husband also writes some kinda sexy crime comic??or something? We’re not really sure who that guy is.

In our recommendation section, our hosts nominated Daredevil: The Man Without Fear, Snowpiercer, Fables, Pretty Deadly, Journey into Mystery featuring Sif, and Starlight for discussion on the next episode, and our selected title is Daredevil: The Man Without Fear.

Our hosts for this episode are Andrew Chard, Tobiah Panshin, Joe Preti, Brant Gillihan-Eddy, Kayleigh Fleeman, and Cade Reynolds.

ravine

This week on View from the Gutters our topic work is??Ravine, Vol. 1 & 2, by Ron Marz and Stjepan Sejic.??Ravine??is a fantasy series about two Wanderers???people who have bonded with a mystic weapon called Grimlas who are destined to alter the destiny of the world.??It is rendered in lavish detail by Sejic, who both illustrates and co-writes the series.

In our recommendation section, our hosts nominated Bullseye: Greatest Hits, Spider-Man’s Tangled Web, Captain Marvel, Wolverine: SNIKT, and Henshin for discussion on the next episode, and our selected title is Captain Marvel, Vol. 1: In Pursuit of Flight and Vol. 2: Down (Issues #1-12 of the 2012 series).

Our hosts for this episode are Andrew Chard, Tobiah Panshin, Brant Gillihan-Eddy, Kayleigh Fleeman, and Cade Reynolds.

You may have noticed that the podcast was a little late getting out the past couple of weeks.??This has been due to Andrew Chard???who edits the episodes after we record them???starting a new day-job, which threw his schedule into disarray. Between that and the constant struggle to get both View from the Gutters and Top of the Stack out on Wednesday, we’ve decided it’s best to move the release day.

So effective this week??View from the Gutters is going to be moving back to Fridays. This way??we hopefully won’t have more delays, and if we can get the episodes prepped ahead of time we may even be able to nail a consistent time of day to release. Thanks for listening everybody, and we’ll see you back here on Friday.
