In each episode we focus on one graphic novel or collected volume of a series, as selected by one of our hosts. We discuss the week's topic work (with frequent digressions), and respond to any listener comments or questions.<br /> <br /> Older episodes are available directly from our website. Bottom line up front: The House of Jack and Stan is on hiatus for the time being.

Slightly longer version: I???Tobiah???have been preoccupied over the summer and fall with attending grad school. My initial intention was to continue releasing episodes on slower schedule, but school has ended up taking all of the time which I would otherwise spend researching and editing episodes, and more. I’ve tried to continue working on podcasts, but the time to produce episodes of a quality I’m happy with has simply not been there.

It’s possible that circumstances may allow us to release new episodes in 2020, but only time will tell. As always stay subscribed to our feeds, follow us on Facebook or Twitter, and stay tuned for future announcements. And our deepest thanks to everyone who has listened to our myriad ramblings over these past years.

Additional shout-outs to Smilin??? Stan Lee, Jolly Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, Kirk Busiek, Mark Waid, Walt and Louise Simonson, Steve Englehart, Roger Stern, John Romita Jr., Roy Thomas, John Buscema, and the many many other writers and artists unnamed who contributed to the Avengers and created the characters we discussed on this episode.

Notes:

  • To our knowledge, Jack Nicklaus never actually claimed to have invented the Arnold Palmer.
  • Tobiah mentions Czechoslovakia, which dissolved in 1993, in the context of gay rights. He meant to say Chechnya.

Cover date November, 1961: This issue features the first appearance of the Fantastic Four, as well as that of the Mole Man and Monster Isle (a location that is periodically revisited over the years).

During the episode we mention William Messner-Loebs’ GoFundMe, which is still ongoing as of the release of this episode, and you can find at:??https://www.gofundme.com/billmessnerloebs. Bill was a popular artist and writer in the 80s and 90s, and may be best remembered for his contributions to the early days of Wally West’s adventures as The Flash, as well as his time writing Wonder Woman.

Like many comic artists for Marvel and DC???who are freelancers, and do not receive health benefits, pensions, nor typically royalties on their work???Bill and his wife have fallen on hard times in recent years, and have been unhoused for some time. You can read his story and contribute to him at the link above, if you wish to.

We plan to hit every issue that Marvel released from ’61 through the end of ’69. Along the way we???re going to talk about the growth of Marvel as a company and some of the real history that was happening at the time these comics were being released.

The series will be released bi-weekly, and the first episode will be dropping in exactly 1 week, on October 1st. On that episode we???re going to cover the pre-history of Marvel, starting in 1934 and ending immediately prior to FF #1???s release.

The title of this series is ???The House of Jack and Stan??? and we hope you???ll enjoy it.

From Amazon:

November 1989. Communism is collapsing, and soon the Berlin Wall will come down with it. But before that happens there is one last bit of cloak & dagger to attend to. Two weeks ago, an undercover MI6 officer was killed in Berlin. He was carrying information from a source in the East ??? a list that allegedly contains the name of every espionage agent working in Berlin, on all sides. No list was found on his body. Now Lorraine Broughton, an experienced spy with no pre-existing ties to Berlin, has been sent into this powderkeg of social unrest, counter-espionage, defections gone bad and secret assassinations to bring back the list and save the lives of the British agents whose identities reside on it.

The darkly twisted story of a young man forced to kill bad people, and how he struggles to keep his secret as it slowly begins to ruin his life and the lives of his friends and loved ones. Both a thriller and a deconstruction of vigilantism, KILL OR BE KILLED is unlike anything this award-winning team has done before.

Tobiah Says:

We’re back after a brief delay, and we’ve got a special guest. This being us there is, of course, some wild disagreement between Joe and Tobiah about this book. So we’ve brought Kenny in tonight to play the role of Brant and valiantly hold the middle ground.

For the record, late in the episode Joe confuses Bernie Madoff with Bernie Goetz, who ironically has more in common with the star of this book than his target.

You???ll notice a reference early in the episode to us doing this with Suicide Squad, which was another episode we recorded and have not yet released.

So, just to be clear we are a bit less lucid than on one of our normal episodes on this one, and it is somewhat less edited than one of our normal episodes. We also recorded this some time ago, and so we are speaking prospectively about certain things that have already happened, so that???s why. Kill Six Billion Demons – Vol. I

EVERYTHING by….??Tom Parkinson-Morgan

Brant says:

Lets play a game first read these two synopsis…

From Image:

In this collection of the first story arc of the popular webcomic Kill Six Billion Demons, sorority sister Allison Ruth must travel to Throne, the ancient city at the center of the multiverse, in an epic bid to save her boyfriend from the clutches of the seven evil kings that rule creation. Includes excerpts from in-universe religious texts, stories, and more.

From TVTropes:

God Is Dead. Far beyond Earth, The Multiverse is in chaos as criminals rule and callous kings maintain a fragile peace. One day, a mysterious and bloody figure appears to a barista named Allison Wanda Ruth, and bestows her with an Ancient Artifact known as the Key of Kings. In the process, Allison finds herself suddenly transported to the final resting place of the gods in the exact center of the multiverse, the red city of Throne. Allison must now travel through Throne and the 777,777 universes of creation to save her kidnapped boyfriend (even if he is a creep) and stop the plans of the stone angels, masked demons and mad god-kings that want her Key for themselves.

Brant says:

So remember when I said last time about East of West “Its a lot to take in…I honestly think this is the kind of book we are lucky to get in a world where comics has broken out as a medium the way that it has…. That said, its got a flavor that some may find off-putting…”?

YYeeeaaaaahhhhh. If the synopsis comparison hasn’t given it away this work is pretty darn intense. Joe found it VERY off-putting, I am weirdly mixed on it, especially since recording the episode and mulling it over more and Tobiah seem pretty much all in. Adam seems between me and Tobiah? Probably closer to Tobiah than me.

So this is a weird read… And I mean that in like a very dictionary way, it has an odd flavor that isn’t like anything else and that can be a great thing if it hits you right. This book has found some very solid fans much in the way (as we briefly discuss) things like Homestuck or even something grander like Star Wars has in that its found a fan base that’s become interested in not just the text but the mythology and relationships of the back matter and so on. Not every work gets that level of attention. ??Join use next time as we swing back into superheroes for Black Panther: A Nation Under Our Feet.

Our hosts for this episode are Brant Gillihan-Eddy, Joe Preti, Adam Panshin and Tobiah Panshin.

In this episode Tobiah references The Land of Make Believe, by Jaro Hess.

East of West, Vol. 1-3

Story by….??Jonathan Hickman
Art??by…. Nick Dragotta and Frank Martin

Brant says:

I don’t like the synopsis for this book’s volumes. They try to make pithy and light the weird and complicated work that Hickman is fully “on” in this book creating and pithy or simple or light is not where my mind goes. In the future of an alternate earth, one where an apocalyptic “word of god” has shaped the world and a constant reincarnation of the Four Horsemen sets up a cycle of demigod like actors, the various leaders of a re-imagined North American continent navigate the various religious, social, military and cultural conflicts that occur as various events unfold….as a Western?

Its a lot to take in. Joe and I are more on board than Toby but I think we do a good job of digging into these first three volumes. There is a lot to get into in the book and I doubt we put a light on all the dark corners this title has to offer. Take the time to read through this one a couple times if you can/if you enjoy it. I honestly think this is the kind of book we are lucky to get in a world where comics has broken out as a medium the way that it has. That said, its got a flavor that some may find offputting. Join us next time as we tackle Kill Six Billion Demons.

The Omega Men – The End is Here

Story by….??Tom King
Art??by….Barnaby Bagenda, Ig Guara, Toby Cypress

From Amazon:

Kyle Rayner, the White Lantern, is dead. And the Omega Men killed him. On live TV. They’re a criminal gang, a terrorist organization, a fanatical cult.

And they’re the only hope for freedom this godforsaken sector of the universe has.

No matter what the citizens of the Vega System think they saw, the White Lantern lives???as the Omega Men’s prisoner. What they really want him to be is their latest recruit in their relentless war against the all-powerful Citadel and its tyrannical Viceroy.

As Kyle gets to know this motley crew of outlaws, he’ll question everything he knows about being a hero. In this strange system where the Green Lanterns are forbidden, will he break his oath and join their revolution? Or will he discover that the Omega Men are monsters in the end?

Brant says:

I’m sorta obsessed with this book because I am convinced I am both missing something and “getting” something from it. It was talked up quite a bit and it clearly has a strange taste. More political thriller than superhero story our group chews on the text quite a bit and I feel like we walk away from it sorta shell shocked (well maybe just me). The art throws us for a loop but I certainly enjoy the bulk of the books imagery. I’m sure there is some yelling in there somewhere. I have added some references to the end of this post because there are some interesting opinions about what the book “is” and “means”and I mention them in the post so want to follow through and acknowledge those other writers that helped me as I read the book.

Story by…. Ed Brubaker & Matt Fraction,
Pencils by…. David Aja, Travel Foreman, Derek Fridolfs, Tom Palmer, Sai Buscema, Russ Heath, Leandro Fernandez, Khari Evans, Kano
Inks by…. David Aja, Derek Fridolfs, Tom Palmer, Kano, Victor Olazaba
Colors by…. Matt Hollingsworth, Dan Brown, June Chung, Jelena Kevic Djurdjevic
Letters by…. Dave Lanphear, Artmonkeys Studios

From Amazon:

Experience a brand-new kind of Iron Fist story, one steeped in legends and fables stretching back through the centuries! Orphaned as a child and raised in the lost city of K’un-Lun, Danny Rand returned to America as the mystical martial artist Iron Fist – but all his kung fu skills can’t help him find his place in the modern world. After learning that the legacy of the Iron Fist holds more secrets than he ever dreamed, Danny is invited to fight in a tournament against the Immortal Weapons. At stake is the life of his friend, the legacy of his father and mentor…and the future of K’un-Lun!

Brant says:

Wow! Nostalgia can be a buzzkill. We argue a bit over the logic of this pick and look at where we think Brubaker or Fraction were the stronger voice. I get cranky and thumbs down the book while everyone else tends to take the “but I still like it” tack. I grouse about how a mixture of artists really take away the consistency of tone for me, while special guest Patrick helps shine the light on the foundational elements that would one day build toward an award winning Hawkeye run for Fractio and Aja. We compare a bit to the recent Iron Fist Netflix series and I ask questions about the history of Danny Rand. Next time we take on The Star Wars!

Our hosts for this episode are Brant Gillihan-Eddy, Joe Preti, special guest Patrick Gilmore and Tobiah Panshin.

Mockingbird Vol 1.

Story by . . . .??Chelsea Cain
Art by . . . . . . Kate Niemczyk, Rachelle Rosenberg, Sean Parsons,??Ibrahim Moustafa,

From Amazon:

Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. Bobbi Morse, the former Avenger known as Mockingbird, goes solo in her own incredible adventures! With a scientific mind and a lethal mastery of martial arts, she’s one of the most versatile, in-demand assets at Maria Hill’s disposal – that makes her ideal for investigating strange goings-on in S.H.I.E.L.D.’s own medical and recovery network. And when Lance Hunter’s undercover gig at the London Hellfire Club goes south, Mockingbird sets off, battle staves at the ready, to save him – and the Queen of England! From helping out a teen driven bonkers by her own new powers, to doing a little dog-sitting, Bobbi shows that she’s a woman of many talents as bestselling author Chelsea Cain and artist Kate Niemczyk make Mockingbird sing!

Brant says:

I brought this book because…I like it? Joe too. Toby is wrong, like ALWAYS…except all the times he isn’t. We return from the VOID to read comics and dish about things relating to this book, women in comics, the fatal flaws of comics and sales and, in general, EASE back on in to our shenanigans. The Spire

Story by . . . .??Simon Spurrier
Art by . . . . . .??Jeff Stokely & Andre May

From Amazon:

Visit the strange and fantastic world of The Spire, where an inexplicable murder has turned an impossible tower of a city??upside down.

The Spire is a mountain of metal and stone, a vast city that rises out of the middle of the radioactive desert. Filled with twisting tunnels, grinding elevators, and ancient machinery, it is home to over a million human and non-human residents. Sha, the last of the species known as the Medusi, is responsible for keeping the hodgepodge of forgotten technology and new biology safe as Commander of the City Watch. But when a string of grisly murders are committed just as a new Baroness of the Spire is about to be sworn in, Sha??will have to find the killer and bring that individual to justice. With the new Baroness housing a deep hatred of non-humans, Sha??will have more than one enemy at her back as a mystery buried in the history of the Spire unravels around her.

Brant says:

GGGGaaaaaahhh I love it! Tobiah loves it! Joe is…a…well…entitled to his own opinion. We talk about the Spire, weird fiction, what it takes to grab a reader and how how the Spire rates. Some mild yelling. We discuss Con Air and action movies of the Nineties for some reason.

Injection??(v.1 & 2)

Story by . . . .??Warren Ellis
Art by . . . . . .??Declan Shalvey & Jordie Bellaire

From Brant??(v.1):

I don’t like the synopsis I found, So here is my best shot:

In the wake of a partnership between industry and the government, the former members of ??“Cultural Cross-Contamination Unit” discover that their mysterious legacy project, The Injection, breaks the rules of normal science and space to reach out and alter reality. As the members of the group each experience this revelation in different ways erstwhile CCCU leader Maria Killbride is recruited to investigate an apparent manifestation of ancient folklore come to life while the other former members of her group are forced to reckon with their past. This volume collects issues #1-5.

From Goodreads??(v.2):

Consulting detective Vivek Headland tackles a case involving a stolen ghost, but when human deli meat causes him to call for help the details of his investigation reveal a new battleground between humanity and The Injection.

Brant Again:

Surely some our pre-episode Bond conversation infiltrated the podscast but otherwise we discuss the complexity of Ellis and the sheer talent of Shalvey and Bellaire. We make some obvious connections/comparisons/contrasts between Ellis and Grant Morrison while talking about how this book might be Ellis at his most balanced best. Threats between Toby and Joe occur which is really par for the course but are part of the opening so it felt necessary to acknowledge. The very knowing and observational Mike Gillis joins us from Radio vs. The Martians! Hopefully we didn’t chase him away forever. Fun!

Hellboy in Hell (v.1 & 2)

Story by . . . .??Mike Mignola
Art by . . . . . .??Mike Mignola & Dave Stewart

From Goodreads??(v.1):

After saving the world in The Storm and the Fury but sacrificing himself and Great Britain, Hellboy is dead, cast into Hell, where he finds many familiar faces and a throne that awaits him.

Mike Mignola returns to draw Hellboy???s ongoing story for the first time since Conqueror Worm. It???s a story only Mignola could tell, as more of Hellboy???s secrets are at last revealed, in the most bizarre depiction of Hell you???ve ever seen.

From Goodreads??(v.2):

After facing off for a second time against the Vampire of Prague, Hellboy, dead and in Hell, comes down with a fatal illness and seeks the help of an incompetent team of doctors. As he explores the geography of Hell, learning little from a confused pair of mapmakers, Hellboy gets a glimpse of the new World Tree that he helped to create, stands accused by his own sister of a terrible murder, and causes the destruction of Pandemonium itself in the climactic chapter of the series that the LA Times calls ???the best work of [Mike Mignola???s] career.???

Dr. Strange: The Oath

Story by . . . .??Brian K. Vaughan
Art by . . . . . . Marcos Martin, Alvaro Lopez, Willie Schubert
Letters??by . . . . Javier Rodriguez

From Goodreads:

Doctor Stephen Strange embarks on the most important paranormal investigation of his career, as he sets out to solve an attempted murder – his own! And with his most trusted friend also at death’s door, Strange turns to an unexpected corner of the Marvel Universe to recruit a new ally.

Brant Says:

Tobiah lurvs himself the Oath…but I do too. Joe is maybe not as impressed and I have some questions about certain plot elements. We do however agree that the book is B E A Utiful and a number of its half page splashes are worthy of a print to hang on the wall. We note some of the fun similarities to the now out and successful Dr. Strange MCU film and talk about whether or not this story works best stand alone or was meant as the start of a new series. We argue about kissing…which you really just have to listen to the podcast to understand.

In addition to our own conversation about this book, Tobiah sat in with Arc Reactions this week to discuss the same book.

The Long Run #16 ??? The Sixth Gun https://www.viewfromthegutters.com/2016/08/29/the-long-run-16-the-sixth-gun/ Mon, 29 Aug 2016 16:02:10 +0000 https://www.viewfromthegutters.com/?p=1994 The Long Run takes place outside of our normal continuity of episodes, and features table discussion of an entire work or long selection of a series.

In this episode of The Long Run??we talk about??The Sixth Gun (which we previously talked about on Episode 148), by Cullen Bunn and Brian Hurtt, with additional art by Tyler Crook and color by Bill Crabtree.

From Wikipedia:

The Sixth Gun takes place in the old west, shortly after the end of the Civil War. The story centers around a set of six pistols, each imbued with dark powers. The wielder of each pistol gains an ability unique to that weapon, and is tied to the pistol until his or her death. The guns are numbered, with the titular Sixth Gun belonging to one of the story’s protagonists: Becky Montcrief. The other main protagonist is Drake Sinclair, a gunfighter with a very pragmatic outlook on the guns. The villains of the series include recurring antagonist General Hume, the Knights of Solomon, the Sword of Abraham, and others vying for control of the guns.

Tobiah Says:

This episode features the long-awaited return of Cade (although sadly just for this episode). We have a good solid discussion on the book, along with digressions (and trigressions) into films, opera, and???as apparently always???mystery/crime fiction.

On the next episode of The??Long Run??we will be reading??Scott Pilgrim, by Brian Lee O’Malley.

Our hosts on this episode are Tobiah Panshin,??Joe Preti, Adam Panshin, and Cade Reynolds.

Brass Sun: The Wheel of Worlds

Story by . . . . . .??Ian Edington
Art by . . . . . . . .??I.N.J. Culbard

From Goodreads:

Wren’s father has revealed to her the secret of their world, that it is only one of many in a clockwork solar system; but it is dying and to save her home, she must first escape it.

The Orrery is a fully functional, life-size clockwork solar system, a clutch of planets orbiting a vast Brass Sun via immense metal spars.

But the once-unified collection of worlds has regressed into eccentric fiefdoms, and ice is encroaching on the outer planets as the sun is dying. Wren and Eptimus must find the key to restart the sun, but first must escape the world known as The Keep….

This is a wholly original new SF-clockpunk series from the bestselling artist of New Deadwardians and the hit writer of Scarlet Traces and Hunterkind.

Brant says:

We talk about worlds within worlds and what tickle our fancy sci-fi wise. Joe runs with a theory that we have all changed intellectual positions due to Brass Sun. I rant a bit about other things in this week’s news that make me angry despite the interesting premise of the work before us.

All-Star Batman and Robin, The Boy Wonder

Story by . . . . . .??The Goddamn Frank Miller
Art by . . . . . . . . The Goddamn Jim Lee

From Wikipedia:

All Star Batman & Robin, the Boy Wonder is an American comic book series written by Frank Miller and penciled by Jim Lee. It was published by DC Comics, with a sporadic schedule, between 2005??and 2008… This was the first series to be launched in 2005 under DC’s All Star imprint. These series are helmed by renowned writers and artists in the American comic book industry and attempt to retell some of the history of prominent DC Universe characters, but outside of DC Universe continuity, and not be restricted by it, in order to appeal to new and returning readers. Each title under the All Star imprint is set in its own continuity and separate universe.??According to Miller, the series takes place in the same universe as The Dark Knight Returns.

Brant says:

The goddamn hosts of this goddamn podcast try to figure out what the hell is going on with this goddamn comic…I’ll stop now. We, like so many before us, struggle to reconcile the craziness of this story and fit it in its time and place in an attempt to understand what really cannot be understood. I go on a sort of strange rant about Marvel fanboys. Much like the comic we read, this episode is sure to leave most wondering what the hell they just experienced.

Lucky Penny

Story by . . . . . .??Ananth Hirsh
Art by . . . . . . . .??Yuko Ota

From CBR:

“Lucky Penny” collects a story arc from “Johnny Wander,” Ananth Hirsh and Yuko Ota’s webcomic, into print. It follows the travails of Penny Brighton, who finds herself without a job or a home at the beginning of the story…Most of “Penny Lucky” has an off-kilter, slice-of-life tone to it, but this changes two-thirds of the way through the book, when Penny’s place gets trashed and the action shifts from believable to bizarre. It’s a risky move to change the framework and the stakes like this without warning, but there’s a significant payoff. The jump is jarring, but Hirsh and Ota successively use the reader’s momentary confusion to add tension to the climax…

Brant says:

I miss this one, much to my regret because I really enjoyed this book. The group breaks down what they like about the book, Joe rants about Johnny Wander for a bit and also admits that he likes sweetness in general. There is praise for the dialogues in the book around relationships. The convo wraps with a conversation about the notion of maturity and how certain ideas and works tend to be tied to considered as more “sophisticated” due to their darker tone. (Much to our chagrin as we see lightness having an equal position in informing the human experience.)

Supreme: Blue Rose

Story by . . . . . . Warren Ellis
Art by . . . . . . . . Tula Lotay

From Goodreads:

…Supreme: Blue Rose re-introduces the central Image Comics character Supreme, in a multi-layered and often hallucinatory mystery presented by New York Times bestselling writer Warren Ellis and acclaimed new artist Tula Lotay in her astonishing graphic novel debut.

Brant says:

We work our way through an entire episode looking to express how Warren Ellis and other brit comic authors make us feel as we rave about Tula Lotay’s art and argue just how well we actually understood this book. We struggle to make Joe talk into his mic and we wax about Alan Moore in a positive light as we wonder how the hell Rob Leifeld ever convinced him to be involved in this property’s history that Ellis so capably takes on in his own intense way.

Our hosts for this episode are Brant Gillihan-Eddy, Adam Panshin, Joe Preti, Kit DeForge and Tobiah Panshin. On our next episode we will be reading Lucky Penny.

Tobiah says:

This is one of our shorter episodes, but it’s a significant work and a great introduction to the world outside of superheroes, particularly for people who are new to comic books. We also had a great conversation about DC Comics (a frequent topic in our group) which was cut from the main episode, but has been appended following the credits.

Daredevil: Love and War, in which the notorious Kingpin of Crime must rescue his own wife from the clutches of extortionists.

Brant Says:

I love the terseness of the blurbs for this book. Considered by many to be one of the great hidden gems of Miller’s Daredevil work, this is a book that features a lot less Daredevil than one might expect but helps to serve as a defining work for the Kingpin. I miss this one due to illness but our intrepid hosts discuss the book in depth and tear into the problematic Miller onion and some of his issues with women, men, superheroes, and so on and how he serves as a source for modern stories and how the critique of that works is??also used to source modern stories.

Black Canary, Vol. 1: ??Kicking and Screaming

Story by . . . . . . Brenden Fletcher
Art by . . . . . . . . Annie Wu & Pia Guerra

From Comixology:

Spinning out of the pages of BATGIRL, writer Brenden Fletcher (BATGIRL) and artists Annie Wu (Hawkeye) and Pia Guerra (Y: THE LAST MAN) present a fresh new take on one of DC Comics’ fiercest female characters.

Former crime fighter Dinah Lance is tearing up the music scene fronting the recently rechristened four-piece band Black Canary. Now using the alias D.D., Dinah and her one-of-a-kind voice are rocketing the band to stardom. But Black Canary has somehow become a magnet for trouble-their shows ending in brawls more often than not. If the group can’t shake the violence following them, their fame-and their lives-might be cut short.

To keep the band safe, the vigilante-turned-vocalist will have to face off against government agents, shadow-monsters, ninjas and one ticked off former lead singer!

Brant says:

Another DC title, another convo about the hard hearts and feelings of the New 52/ DCYou. Kayleigh and I see this as a redemption title but Joe is not as convinced. I struggle with the loss of “my” Black Canary and Kayleigh talks about her love of the book and fun is had by all.

The Long Run #14 ??? Bone https://www.viewfromthegutters.com/2016/03/11/the-long-run-14-bone/ Fri, 11 Mar 2016 16:10:31 +0000 https://www.viewfromthegutters.com/?p=1783 The Long Run takes place outside of our normal continuity of episodes, and features table discussion of an entire work or long selection of a series.

In this episode of The Long Run??we talk about??Bone, by Jeff Smith. Published independently between 1991 and 2004, Bone follows??the three Bone cousins???cartoon character-like people exiled from the town??Boneville (in the same sense that Donald Duck is from Duckburg)???who,??after crossing a vast desert, find themselves trapped in a magical valley filled with monsters, dragons, lost princesses, and ancient prophesies.

The series is filled with high-stakes adventure, light-hearted humor, and??it’s fair share of loss and sorrow. It’s an amazing comic for all ages, and is a particularly good introduction to the world of comics for younger readers who have never read a comic before.

On the next episode of The??Long Run??we will be reading??Doom Patrol, by Grant Morrison.

Our hosts on this episode are Tobiah Panshin,??Joe Preti, Audrey Preti, and Cade Reynolds.

Announcement! https://www.viewfromthegutters.com/2016/03/04/announcement/ Fri, 04 Mar 2016 18:04:57 +0000 https://www.viewfromthegutters.com/?p=1767 Hey everybody. We have a bunch of announcements to make, so we made a special mini-episode to cover all the upcoming changes/events here at View from the Gutters.

If you don’t want to listen to the episode, here’s a quick run-down:

1. Voting

We’re making a pretty significant change to the way we make the show, starting with the next episode. After some long conversations behind the scenes we’ve decided to get rid of our voting method for picking the books that we read. There are a few reasons for this, but the short version is that we unanimously agreed that we felt constricted by only knowing what book we’d be reading 1 week ahead, were unhappy??with the politics of the voting, i.e. certain books not getting picked despite strong??support.

The upside for you as listeners is that we’re now going to have a calendar (which you can already see on the right-hand sidebar) of the next 6 books we’ll be discussing. So you can read ahead if you want, and we strongly encourage you to email us??with your questions and comments so that we can include them in our discussion when we record.

2. Patreon

We’ve once again revised our funding levels on Patreon. You can check out our Patreon page??for details, but here’s the big one: we’re going to open our livestream up to everyone who decides to support us at any funding level. We’d love it if you’d contribute to the show, and join us while we record the show. You can even yell at us in the chat channel, or talk to other listeners.

As a special incentive (and this is something we may repeat from time-to-time), we’re going to let absolutely everybody join us on the next??livestream. We’ll flash this link a couple more times in the next week, but you can click here to go to the livestream page. Join us on Wednesday, March 9 at 8pm PST when we talk about the Parker books, by Darwyn Cooke.

3. Emerald City Comic Con

Emerald City is coming up in about a month. We’ll be in attendance, and we’ll be having an informal meet-up for anyone who would like to say hello. The meet-up will be on Saturday, time and location TBD.

We’ll also be in attendance for our good friends Out of the Fridge’s panel on Saturday at 6pm. We think it would be awesome if you could be there too.

Thanks for reading.

Episode 154 ??? Gladstone’s School for World Conquerors https://www.viewfromthegutters.com/2016/02/08/episode-154-gladstones-school-for-world-conquerors/ Mon, 08 Feb 2016 14:50:12 +0000 https://www.viewfromthegutters.com/?p=1738 This week on View from the Gutters our topic work is??Gladstone’s School for World Conquerors, by??Mark Andrew Smith and Armand Villavert Jr. Set in a top secret school for young and aspiring super-villains (themselves predominantly the offspring of super-villains), the series follows the hijinks and adventures of a group of students. All is???as is so often the case???not quite as it seems, as unbeknownst to the children a secret accord keeps the peace between heroes and villains, and not everyone is happy with this status quo.

This series is fun, colorful, and great for younger readers???but contains more serious content as well. Readers familiar with animated series such as The Venture Bros. and Teen Titans will be on familiar ground.

For our next episode we will be reading My Friend Dahmer.

Our hosts for this episode are Tobiah Panshin, Kit Deforge, Kayleigh Fleeman, Joe Preti, and Brant Gillihan-Eddy.

Released by Vertigo beginning in 2013, the series follows a field team of agents from the eponymous government agency as they undertake missions battling against the breakdown of the laws of nature themselves.??Part and parcel with these missions are glimpses into the mysterious histories of the members of the team.

Bright and colorful, with Rodriguez’s trademark intense style, FBP???originally released for 1 issue as Collider???is a crazy science romp with a healthy serving of mystery on the side. It features engaging characters and occasionally over the top action.

In our recommendation section our hosts nominated Kaptara,??Prince of Persia, East of West, The Multiversity, and My Friend Dahmer??for discussion on our next episode, and our selected title is My Friend Dahmer. We will be reading that title for Episode 155.

The series follows the adventures of??Adrienne, a princess placed in a tower guarded by a dragon who decides that waiting in a tower to be rescued is dumb. She escapes from the tower, befriends the dragon, and together the two launch on an adventure to save Adrienne’s seven similarly imprisoned sisters along with any other princesses they might encounter.

Along the way they make many friends???including Adrienne’s constant companion Bedelia, a teenaged half-dwarf blacksmith???and several foes. This series is a psychedelic, sci-fi, gender-bent reboot??of the classical epic poem??The??Odyssey, by Homer. It follows the adventures of Odyssia and her crew, returning home to Ithicaa after the fall of Troiia, beset by all manner of woes at the hands of Zeus and Poseidon in retribution for slights both real and imagined.

If you’re familiar with the story of the original Odyssey???told and retold time and again???than you understand the broad outlines of this series, albeit??gloriously twisted. What truly sets this version apart, however, is the astounding artwork of Ward???who paints a trippy, multitudinous-colored, metaphor-laden universe which at all times??provokes??the senses.

Victoria Robado. This series is a revival, as well as a reimagining, of the outrageous 80s cartoon series of the same title.

It features the musical and romantic adventures of the eponymous band, composed of Jerrica Benton, along with her sisters Kimber, Aja, and Shana.??Following the recent death of their father, Jerrica???who suffers from crippling stage fright???uncovers his secret holographic supercomputer, Synergy, which she uses to transform into a glamorous and glittering alter-ego: Jem.??The group then??competes with rival band??The Misfits for fortune??and fame.

The series is light and colorful,??and strongly targeted towards younger readers.

This week we are adding a new feature to View from the Gutters. Each month one of our episodes will be devoted to a “redemption pick”???a previously pitched but unselected title picked by one of our hosts. We’ll be taking it in turns so that each of our six regular hosts gets two redemption picks each year. Our goal is to recover some of the books that have previously been benched due to our voting process, but which we feel??will prompt meaningful discussion.

Therefore, as selected by Joe??for Episode 150 we will be reading??Top 10, by Alan Moore.

In our recommendation section our hosts nominated In Real Life, Bitch Planet, ODY-C, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier for discussion on our next episode, and our selected title is ODY-C. We will read that title for Episode 151.

Our hosts for this episode are Tobiah Panshin, Joe Preti,??Missy Brinks-Hoppe, and Kirbotron 2000. Missy is the co-host of Fake Geek Girls, “a podcast looking at nerdy pop culture from both a fan and critical perspective.” We thank her greatly for joining us on this episode.

This is a light-hearted, fun, humorous series which is all about family. The Allreds’ art is, as always, fantastic (no pun intended), and the series is filled with easter eggs and references to the original 1960s Fantastic Four run.

ANNOUNCEMENT: The Departure of Andrew Chard https://www.viewfromthegutters.com/2015/12/14/announcement-the-departure-of-andrew-chard/ Mon, 14 Dec 2015 17:52:52 +0000 https://www.viewfromthegutters.com/?p=1685 Hey everybody. We had an announcement at the top of this week???s episode that I wanted to repeat in writing: Andrew Chard has made the decision to step away from View from the Gutters in order to focus on producing new video content for Gamma Bomb, Andrew???s channel on Youtube.

Chard is not just a, but the founding member of the show, and he has been instrumental in its production these past few years. The significance of his contribution cannot be overstated. We are all deeply appreciative of him and the time and effort that he???s put into making View from the Gutters a success. We also wish him the best on his future projects.

As for View from the Gutters itself, the show will continue to come out weekly just as before. However, you may notice some small changes to the show in the coming weeks and months as we adjust to a new workflow and move into our 4th year of the show???the first of which is a brand new intro theme tune composed by Joe Preti.

Comments and questions are welcome, as always. Thank you all for listening, and we hope you???re having an excellent holiday season.

Andrew Chard can be found on Youtube at his channel, Gamma Bomb. He will also continue to feature as a contributor to Out of the Fridge.

A Short Announcement https://www.viewfromthegutters.com/2015/11/26/a-short-announcement/ Fri, 27 Nov 2015 01:59:26 +0000 https://www.viewfromthegutters.com/?p=1660 Hi everyone. We???ve had a couple of logistical issues crop up here at VtfG this week which proved an insurmountable obstacle to our regular recording: there has been a massive riot, culminating in a breakout from cookie jail. Cookie felons are on the loose!

As a result episode 146 will be delayed. However, the new episode of The Long Run???discussing Elephantmen???is already in the can and being edited, so we will be releasing that episode on Monday in place of the regular episode. We should be back to our normal release schedule very soon, but we ask that you bear with us in this time of cookie chaos.

Thank you all for your patience as we get things sorted here. We love you all very much, and Happy Thanksgiving to our listeners from US. To everyone else: happy totally regular Thursday/Friday.

Episode 145 ??? Johnny the Homicidal Maniac https://www.viewfromthegutters.com/2015/11/23/episode-145-johnny-the-homicidal-maniac/ Tue, 24 Nov 2015 02:14:33 +0000 https://www.viewfromthegutters.com/?p=1655 This week on View from the Gutters our topic work is??Johnny the Homicidal Maniac, by Jhonen Vasquez. Originally published in the mid-90s, JTHM is one of the seminal indie comics of the period. It features the adventures (i.e. murders) of Johnny, a deranged psychopathic murder who is honestly kind of a sweet guy when you get right down to it. Johnny is joined on his travails by the imaginary voices in his head, as well as the many MANY people who suffer (some perhaps justly) violent deaths at his hands.

There’s also this one wall that he keeps painting with people’s blood, so that it doesn’t go all soft…

This is a complex work which is filled with black humor, but which is also strangely meditative on??subcultures and our larger existential condition. It’s also been hugely influential on the evolution of indie comics, along with it’s animated sibling Invader Zim, also created by Vasquez.

In our recommendation section our hosts nominated Wolverine: Snikt, Through the Woods, Black Widow: The Name of the Rose, and Rai??for discussion on our next episode, and our selected title is??Through the Woods.

Our hosts for this episode are Andrew Chard, Tobiah Panshin, Kayleigh Fleeman, and Kit Deforge.

Whew, what a mouthful!

According to wikipedia legend???O Best Beloved???this series was originally published as??The Children’s Crusade??in 1993 as two 1-shot issues written by Neil Gaiman, which were to bookend a story told through the Annual issues of five ongoing Vertigo series.??However, due to reasons (which are several and varied) many of the annual issues only touched on the intended story tangentially, and due to its general incoherence it was never collected.

Free Country: A Tale from the Children’s Crusade, released in 2015, discards the annual issues with a brand new middle to??Children’s Crusade #1 & 2, written by Toby Litt, along with additional pages that fill in other gaps within those issues.

The series follows the first case of The Dead Boy Detectives,??Edwin and Charles (introduced in the pages of The Sandman), who are tasked with finding a missing child. Children have, in fact, been disappearing all over the world and in great numbers. They soon discover that the children are being taken to Free Country, a mysterious neverland free from the tyranny and abuse of adults.

But all is not well, even in Free Country, and Edwin and Charles??must race against time to stop a nefarious plot that could alter the fate of the world (or something to that effect).

In our recommendation section our hosts nominated The Dark Tower: Gunslinger Born, Death Vigil, Bitch Planet, The Question: The Five Books of Blood, and Lobster Johnson: Get the Lobster??for discussion on our next episode, and our selected title is The Question: The Five Books of Blood.

Published in 2004, The New Frontier is one of DC’s finest Elseworld comics. Set primarily in the 1950s, it visits a version of the DC universe on the boundary between the Golden and Silver Ages, in which the various heroes first appear in the year of their first publication???primarily focusing on Hal Jordan as Green Lantern and J’onn J’onzz the Martian Manhunter, although the JSA, Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and other popular characters of the time feature prominently.

The series aims for a more realistic take on the period, including addressing issues of racism, sexism, the red scare, and the space race???albeit through a??comic book lens. The dichotomy of the upbeat 4-color attitude of the times when contrasted with a more modern story-telling and social sensibility creates a fascinating landscape against which Cooke paints a story of heroism against all odds.
